{"id":266,"date":"2019-12-24T01:07:40","date_gmt":"2019-12-24T01:07:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.nepenthe-farm.com\/blog\/?page_id=266"},"modified":"2020-04-10T13:04:53","modified_gmt":"2020-04-10T17:04:53","slug":"why-nepethe","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blog.nepenthe-farm.com\/blog\/?page_id=266","title":{"rendered":"Why Nepethe"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-left\">Why the Name <em>&#8220;Nepenthe&#8221;<\/em>?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<strong><em>Nepenthe<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; is a name from ancient \nGreek, meaning &#8220;no sorrow.&#8221;&nbsp; It referred to a legendary drink to dispel \ngrief.&nbsp; (So the ancient Greeks had the concept of &#8220;antidepressant&#8221;, even\n if they did not necessarily have the pharmaceutical technology.)&nbsp; &#8220;<em>Nepenthe<\/em>&#8221;\n is sometimes (depending on the author) conflated with the River Lethe, \none of the rivers of the underworld, whose waters the spirits of the \ndead drink to forget their mortal lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the classical Greek, the name <em>Nepenthe<\/em>, for a cure for troubles, has passed into other literature.&nbsp; Two famous examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Nepenthe is a drink of sovereign grace,<br>Devised by the Gods, for to assuage<br>Heart&#8217;s grief,<br>And bitter gall away to chase,<br>Which stirs up anguish and contentious rage.<br>Instead thereof sweet peace and quietage<br>It doth establish in the troubled mind.<\/p><p>Few men, but such as sober are and sage,<br>Are by the Gods to drink thereof assigned.<br>But such as drink, eternal happiness do find.<\/p><cite> Edmund Spenser, 1596<br><em>Faerie Queene<\/em>, Book 4, Canto iii<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-left\"><p>The physician &#8230; next bestowed his attention on the mother <em>{Hester}<\/em>.  With calm and intent scrutiny, he felt her pulse, looked into her eyes  &#8230; and, finally, satisfied with his investigation, proceeded to mingle another draught.<\/p><p>&#8220;I know not Lethe nor Nepenthe,&#8221; remarked he; &#8220;but I have learned  many new secrets in the wilderness, and here is one of them&#8230;. Drink  it! It may be less soothing than a sinless conscience. That I cannot  give thee.
